Gall Force: Eternal Story

Gall Force: Eternal Story

2.5/5 Stars

Original Story: Hideki Kakinuma
Director: Katsuhiko Akiyama
Running Time: 86 min. Released: 1986

Though a good friend of mine rates this as the worst anime movie ever made, it's not quite that bad. Chances are you'll like and enjoy some part of the movie, since it's basically a conglomeration of ideas found in many other popular SciFi movies and stories. Set against the backdrop of a vast interstellar war between the Solenoids (who are all women) and the Paranoids (I know, terrible name) Gall Force is the story of the crew of a small Solenoid vessel the Star Leaf, which is cut off from the main fleet during a battle. After narrowly escaping the battle, the crew of the Star Leaf decides to continue with their orders and rendezvous at planet Chaos to defend it. Along the way they become part of a Paranoid experiment, and are betrayed by their own military. The story has a lot of plot twists to it, most of which are obvious well before hand. The end is predictable, and sets up for the numerous sequels to this movie. I found the dialog and plot to be sub-par and cheesy, though the animation is good for anime from the Eighties. I especially enjoyed some of the mecha designs which are above average for the period. Whether or not you like this movie, many consider it a classic, and it did have a big impact on anime as a whole, leading to more ambitious Sci-Fi plots in later years.
